Alfonso di Chimici is the Duke of Volana, a position he inherited from his father[1]. He is married to Bianca of Fortezza[2].

Overview[]

Alfonso first appears in City of Stars, as the representative of Volana for the Twelfth of the Goat after previously being mentioned by Gaetano di Chimici as a possible marriage prospect for his sister Beatrice. He is revealed to be Rinaldo di Chimici's older brother who has only recently inherited his duchy from their father, who died two years before. After the Stellata, the head of the family, Duke Niccolo, arranges Alfonso to marry a distant cousin, Bianca, while Alfonso's younger sister, Caterina, is chosen as a bride for Niccolo's eldest son, Fabrizio. Alfonso agrees to the arrangement, admitting that a wife would alleviate some loneliness he has felt since becoming duke, as does Rinaldo, who sees that the Volana branch of the family has benefited greatly from Niccolo's planning.

In City of Flowers, both Alfonso and Caterina begin preparing for their weddings in Giglia with their mother, the Dowager Duchessa Isabella. During the weddings, the Nucci attacks result in the Massacre at the Church of Annunciation; Alfonso is the only groom who is neither killed nor injured and tasks himself with protecting the brides, his new wife Bianca and her sister Lucia, his sister Caterina, and Francesca of Bellona. After the massacre, Alfonso offers Lucia the chance to spend time with her sister in Volana under the care of his mother, though Lucia declines and returns to Fortezza alone.

As the English Stravaganti examine potential allies among the di Chimici in City of Ships, they consider the possibility of Alfonso as a sympathizer given his noble actions in the aftermath of the weddings in Giglia, though they acknowledge they are uncertain of his actual loyalties beyond the events they witnessed.
